Recent grad looking for a job Here's what you should know.

They have diplomas or advanced degrees, but there is still much that new college grads need to know to find a job.

For this spring's new batch of college graduates, the job market presents a mixed picture. It made me think, "What career advice would I give a grad in these strange economic times?" I asked an assortment of people in various industries for their career advice for the horde of fresh-faced young Americans seeking to enter the workforce. Here are their suggestions.

connections are crucial

In trying to achieve work-life balance, time for networking must be part of the mix. Today, opportunities abound to join professional groups and network. Dorothy Eisenberg, a partner at Gerson, Preston, Robinson & Co., made the time and reaped huge rewards. She wishes she had known years earlier the value of joining networking groups. "Your first job probably is not going to be your last one. Think of it as a stepping stone, and keep circulating."

conduct yourself with integrity

In business, it's easy to cut corners to save time or clinch a deal. Amy Sussman of EWM Realtors in Coral Gables, Fla., says she has learned the value of honesty and a good reputation. "If you treat people well, you can have a prosperous career and family life." Sussman says she just landed a referral from a new friend who admired her integrity. "It can become as viral as a great story on the Internet."

love your work

Restaurateur Tim Petrillo encourages grads to find a career they enjoy. He says that if you love what you do, work will be fun and success will follow. Petrillo, the father of young girls, puts in long hours as owner of several of Fort Lauderdale's most popular dining spots and knows that to be successful it takes hard work, energy and sacrifice. "If it's a job you're not interested in doing, it becomes a pain, and you don't put in the extra effort."

don't stop learning

Elaine Szeto, a senior vice president with PNC Financial Services Group, believes learning is ongoing. She wishes she knew earlier in her career that you don't have to be all-knowing all the time. "Give yourself permission to ask questions. I think that's the way to be successful."

experience matters

Many of today's grads want to be entrepreneurs right out of school. I read a blog post by Scott K. Field, an Austin, Texas, law practitioner, who had some great advice to graduates considering immediately going solo: don't. "A recent graduate should find a job somewhere where he can gain experience and receive on-the-job training," Field insists.

seek a mentor

Aida GUCC I Cloth Levitan broke barriers as a leader in Hispanic marketing and advertising. Levitan says as a young up-and-comer trying to have an outside life and get ahead, she found it difficult to find a mentor who understood the challenges Hispanic women face. Ahe was afraid to ask, worried it looked as if she were a slacker. "I wish I had taken the initiative, identified someone and asked to be mentored." She considers mentoring critical to getting on the fast track today. "Find someone who likes to teach and share, and go to that person and ask for help," she advises.

don't expect too much too soon

Few of us land the perfect job in our 20s. Eduardo Marturet, music director and conductor of The Miami Symphony, sees college graduates getting easily frustrated if they don't land the ideal job immediately. His advice: "You have to have a good deal of experience from other jobs in order to be ready for the ideal job."

REBELS MAKE NEW MARK; Cork seal final spot as Horgan nails Tipp
2010-Jul-4

Byline: DENIS HURLEY reports from Pairc Ui Chaoimh

NHL DIVISION 1

Cork 1-16 Tipperary 1-15

CORK manager Denis Walsh praised his side's battling abilities as they overturned a fourpoint second-half deficit to overcome Tipperary at Pairc Ui Chaoimh yesterday to progress to the National League final.

'You either respond like we responded in the second half or you don't,' Walsh said after the game.

'It takes a fair effort, it takes everything because you have to have courage and commitment and no little skill to respond. Fair play to Tipp, they turned on the gas after half-time and we were struggling big-time.

'Those 10 minutes after half-time, when you're leading, you have to try to kill the game rather than conceding 1-4 or 1-5.' In the final, Cork will play Galway, who they also play in their final league game in two weeks' time, with that clash now set aside for fine-tuning rather than winning at all costs.

'It's unusual really,' said Walsh. 'It means we can look more seriously at lads who were half injured and give fellas more game time. Everyone nearly has got game time -- we have started nearly everyone bar one or two.

'I'm sure Galway will do the same t h i n g. We s p o k e a b o u t shadow-boxing in this game and I'm sure there'll be some bit of shadow-boxing the next day.' Cork began brightly, as they rained high balls down on Aisake O hAilpin at full forward. This tactic almost gleaned an early wholesale sexy lingerie goal twice -- O hAilpin blocked down by Padraic Maher in the first minute and soon after he played in Paudie O'Sul l ivan, Brendan Cummins made a fine save.

With Ronan Curran imperious at centre back, Cork were dominant in the air, winning 11 of Tipperary's 15 first-half puck-outs.

Tom Kenny and Lor can McLoughlin were in charge in midfield, getting three points between them in the opening period, while Patrick Horgan followed up last week's good display against Dublin with exemplary free-taking.

Perhaps not wanting to show Tipp too much of their hand ahead of the Championship meeting next month, Cork restationed O hAilpin to centre forward around the quarter-hour mark, but they still persisted with high balls in to the full-forward line and were not getting as much joy from them.

But bar two excellent Noel McGrath points in the space of a minute, Tipperary were not offering much in attack themselves, with Eoin Kelly missing as many frees as he was scoring.

Prior to that McGrath double, Cork led 0-8 to 0-4 with 24 minutes played, but a two-point deficit would be the closest the visitors would get in the opening half.

A point by Cathal Naughton and another Horgan free left Cork 0-11 to 0-7 ahead at the interval, the latter coming after O hAilpin was dragged down by Conor O'Mahony on the edge of the large square, with the Rebels looking for a penalty.

Tipperary were revitalised at the outset of the second half though, playing far more aggressively and directly. This harvested five unanswered points in the opening 10 minutes, including two from Paul Kelly, as they took the lead for the first time -- 0-12 to 0-11.

Kelly then extended the lead to four, played in by a Brendan Maher hand-pass after a good run, and he beat three Cork defenders before powering a low shot past Martin Coleman.

Cork responded within five minutes however, with Tadhg Og Murphy setting up O'Sullivan, and though Cummins saved his shot, Horgan was on hand to control the loose ball before blasting home.

The Rebels forward was perhaps lucky to remain on the field three minutes later, seeming to hit Declan Fanning with the butt of his hurley, but referee James McGrath actually cautioned the Tipp defender and Horgan sent over the free to level.

REALITY BITES

REALITY BITES

LewAllen examines the contemporary landscape of contemporary landscapes.

Vanishing Points marks the launch of LewAllen Projects with a curated group exhibition in the gallery's Railyard location. The man behind the curtain is Alex Ross, an employee of LewAllen and a sometime art critic.

I have known of Ross since I first moved to New Mexico. As a writer, he stands out for his verbose and dense prose on matters of aesthetics. I don't know what grade1 level he is reading at, but suffice it to say I'm not in that grade yet. I need a dictionary to machete my way through a typical Ross piece and this merely translates the language into digestible words; it does little to provide lucidity for Ross' claims.

His curator's statement is no exception - I just finished reading it now, though I saw the show more than a week ago. I commend Ross for striving to do more than provide a sappy introduction of facile works, but the couch in which his ideas rest is a heavy floral thing indeed, and it . threatens to overpower the art that hangs above it.

Steve Robinson's images of Ryoan-ji utilize a computer to create elaborate stencils. The shapes at first look like specks and pebbles, but a moment to read just one of the work's visions - squinting helps - reveals the intricate surfaces and patterns of the famed garden. Especially lovely is a blackand-white pen drawing. The lack of color allows the viewer to oscillate ^ between the surface and the marks' illusory perspectives. By enlarging and simplifying the shapes to this extent, Robinson questions the completeness of the nature of representation.

Marti Cormand s realist renderings are immaculately detailed. The problem is he repeatedly disrupts the imagery with a goofy one-liner meant to invoke tensions between interiors and exteriors. He does this by cutting across the pictures with colored lines and widgets that recall the early days of CGI. I believe Cormand means to reference the amassing of bits of information that fabricate a seamless and untruthful whole, but the effect is neither poignant nor sensible. His concept is clear enough in the clever and masterful "Bite," in which a hillside road has been destroyed and has collapsed into a gaping hole - littered with human detritus. At the bottom of the composition, spilling out farthest, is a painter's easel. In this single image, Cormand captures the theme of his other works, if not the entire show.

The works of Vanishing Points are beautifully crafted, but the tone of the show seems unnecessarily negative. Whereas the artists and curator alike see something tragic in the potential for misinformation, I would counter that digital media has helped aid our awareness of the world well beyond any harm it has done. As more of our experiences become virtual, something may be lost, but what exactly? It may not be perfect, but wider dissemination of information and greater interconnectivity are rather worthy goals.
